How to Look Confident in Your Headshot
(Even If You Hate Photos)

Most people aren't bad in photos. They're just never coached. Here's what actually makes the difference — and how to walk into your next session feeling ready.

The real problem

Why most headshots fall flat

The photographer says "smile." You do your best. The photo comes back looking stiff, forced, or just… not like you. Sound familiar?

It's not your fault. Most headshot sessions give you zero guidance on what to do with your face, your posture, or your eyes. And without that guidance, your brain defaults to a performance — not a real expression.

A great headshot isn't about lighting or a fancy background. It's about being coached into a natural, confident expression — in real time. That's the part most photographers skip.

Common myths

Things that are not your problem

✕
"I'm just not photogenic" — Photogenic is not a trait. It's the result of being guided well.
✕
"I need to lose weight first" — Your headshot works for you right now, exactly as you are.
✕
"I always look awkward in photos" — You look awkward when no one tells you what to do. That's fixable.
✕
"I'll just use my phone" — A phone captures what's in front of it. A coached session captures who you really are.

Your eyes do the heavy lifting

A genuine expression starts behind your eyes, not at your mouth. Think of someone you love right before you smile — that's the look.

Posture changes everything

Sit or stand tall, then lean your chin slightly forward and down. It sounds odd but it opens your face and reads as confident on camera.

Relax your jaw on purpose

Most people clench without realizing it. Let your tongue rest gently on the roof of your mouth — it softens your jawline and relaxes your whole face.

Wear what makes you feel like you

Solid colors, well-fitting clothes, nothing you have to tug at. If you feel good, it shows. If you're uncomfortable, that shows too.

Don't try to perform a smile

Forced smiles read as forced. The best approach is to let a real one surface — a good photographer coaches you there. That's the difference.

What you get with coaching

When someone guides you through it

✓
You see your images in real time and we refine together — no surprises at the end.
✓
Small adjustments — a shift in chin angle, a breath, a different thought — make a visible difference.
✓
You leave with images that actually look like you, not a stiff version of you trying to take a photo.
✓
You only choose images you love. No settling, no "it's fine."

“You don’t have to be a natural in front of the camera.
You just need someone who knows how to bring it out of you.”
